Surf Sister Saturdays #3: October 27

On Saturdays in the Spring and Fall, women and girls ages 9-99 get together to connect with the ocean and learn to surf. All equipment is provided and no experience is necessary as participants are welcomed into the Brown Girl Surf community. For beginners, we introduce you gently to all elements of surfing, from wetsuits, board safety, to learning how to be in the ocean, all in a supportive female-centered environment. Those who have surfed before can continue to work on their skills and enjoy the great community vibe. This fall, we're also revamping our schedule to have more time in the water! If transportation is an issue, we can help you carpool from Oakland. Payment is due at the time of registration.

The cost to us as an organization for running these programs is $100 per individual per session. We ask that those who are able to pay this amount do. We are committed to making surfing accessible to everyone so sliding scale pricing is also available.

Creek to Bay Day Kayak Cleanup

IMG_0078.jpg

Join Brown Girl Surf to clean up the Oakland estuary, on a special waterborne cleanup crew.  We've partnered with California Canoe and Kayak Company in Jack London square, who are lending their kayaks to members of the Brown Girl Surf community for our clean up effort, in honor of Oakland's Creek to Bay Day.

We'll be showing our love for the ocean and waterways that bring so much to our lives, by removing trash that harms animals and pollutes the water.  Meet at 8:30 am in front of California Canoe and Kayak shop in Jack London Square for registration and to get situated in your kayak.  We'll be getting out on the water around 9am, so make sure to show up on time.

This event and kayak rental is free for anyone who has surfed with Brown Girl Surf before plus one guest. New friends are welcome to join and will need to rent a kayak.

All participants will be required to sign a waiver before participating in the event. These will be available at the kayak. All minors under 18 will be required to have a parent/guardian sign for them. Anyone without a signed waiver will not be allowed to participate in the event.

Civics is Sexy!

Screen Shot 2018-08-17 at 12.00.23 PM.png

What’s sexier than speaking your truth through your civic involvement?

Join the Surfrider Foundation, Brown Girl Surf and Levi Strauss &Co. on Saturday, September 8th for our “Civics is Sexy!” workshop, a free participatory event promoting effective community engagement. Share about issues you care about and, in return, we'll show you how to get involved in a meaningful, effective way! How hot is that?

Additionally:

  • Hear the stories and experiences of civic engagement from people in your community.

  • Discover how to make a difference in your community and make your voice heard by California's decisionmakers.

  • Learn how to get the information you need from city councils, county supervisors and state legislators and use that information to craft testimony and speak out at meetings to make a difference. (Bonus: government officials will be on-hand to share, listen and give feedback.)

  • Connect with others who also care!

We invite all community members, ages 14 & up, to join us as we learn how to become more active citizens. Coffee and lunch will be served.

The doors open for sign-in and networking at 9AM

The time is now to get involved!
