Our Surf Volunteer Programs

There are many ways volunteers can help with our beach-based programs.  Whether you are an experienced surfer, a beginner, or someone who just loves going to the beach, there is a way to get involved.  And of course we always need help with our land-based operations, so if that's more your speed, click here for more information.  Teachers, please check out our School Surf Leaders program.

Transport Team

Transport Team members use their personal vehicles to drive girls and women from Oakland to Brown Girl Surf programs at the beach in Half Moon Bay or Marin. Once at the beach, transport team members can either relax on their own and meet us at the end of the program day, OR help with on-land supervision, logistics, and activities during the program day. (Please note, transport team members do not get in the water during program days.  If you would like to volunteer with water-based activities, check out our Volunteer Surf Instructor program.) Most programs take place on Saturdays during the school year and weekdays during the summer.

Volunteer Surf Instructor

Volunteer Surf Instructors are our front line "spreaders of stoke." In addition to driving girls and women to and from the beach for Brown Girl Surf program days, they provide basic surf instruction and supervision, and help facilitate logistics and activities.  They also conduct outreach and bring new members into our community.  Volunteer Surf Instructors must be competent in the ocean with a surf board.  They receive training in basic surf instruction and ocean safety.  Most programs take place on Saturdays during the school year and weekdays during the summer.

Leadership Crew

Leadership Crew members work closely with our youth Rising Leaders Crew, teaming up with youth members for the season (Spring or Fall) as they take on more responsibility in the Brown Girl Surf community and co-facilitate Surf Sister Saturdays.  They also conduct outreach and bring new members into our community.  Leadership Crew members are experienced surfers who have already acted as Volunteer Surf Instructors during at least 6 programs, or have equivalent experience. Most programs take place on Saturdays in the Spring and Fall.
