About

Named in honor of Polynesia's first female surfers, Brown Girl Surf TM is a journey to share with you the stories and projects of trailblazing female surfers from around the world.  The first girls in the Gaza Strip are taught to surf amongst dropping bombs and flying bullets. A 22-year old journalism student becomes India’s first female surfer.  These are the extraordinary stories of Brown Girl Surf TM.

Simultaneously, in California, a female surfer in her 30's leaves her career after 11 years to pursue this project.  As your narrator, she'll also share tips and insights on what she learns along the way not only from the amazing trailblazers she meets, but from her own experiences as a surfer, explorer, social entrepreneur, activist and dancer who dreams to one day surf like a pro!

Mission:

Our mission is to elevate the historical significance of trailblazing female surfers, and to connect them with resources and support (and each other!) so they can continue making waves of change in their communities now and for generations to come.

Vision:

Brown Girl Surf TM envisions a world in which female surfers are connected, collaborative, and engaged in using surfing as a force for personal empowerment and positive social change.

Stuff We Do

  • Share stories of trailblazing female surfers and surfing communities
  • Connect trailblazing female surfers around the world with one another through an online forum (coming soon!)
  • Highlight and direct resources to support rad social change projects started and run by female surfers.  Examples include:
          -  Organizing beach clean-ups and environmental awareness in India
          -  Producing surf media from Brazil which puts girls front and center
          -  Supporting projects to teach low-income girls to surf along the CA coast              and to empower them with social and environmental activism
